About Barton Creek: History

A Legendary Name Among Austin Texas Resorts

A Legendary Name Among Austin Texas Resorts In 1985, the developers of Barton Creek Resort & Spa looked upon the raw land with a modern-day vision of a world-class residential development comprising million-dollar estates, a private country club, resort, and a European-style spa and fitness center. Every detail of the Austin Texas resort would be designed to harmonize with nature and preserve the splendor of the Texas Hill Country.

Their vision is now reality. Ben Barnes and former Texas Governor John Connally established a joint venture with Kindred & Company to manage the complex. The Community Investment and Development Corporation, a wholly owned real estate subsidiary of Community Federal Savings and Loan of St. Louis, would finance the venture. By June 1985, ground for the Central Texas resort was broken.

Barton Creek's renowned Fazio Foothills golf course opened for play in July 1986. The course design has proven to be an embodiment of the natural Hill Country -- celebrating waterfalls, hills, and caves. It is a unique playing experience for golfers of all levels.

In May 1987, the Barton Creek property changed hands. After the declaration of bankruptcy by Barnes/Connally, Community Federal Savings and Loan maintained ownership of Barton Creek and retained International Conference Resorts -- a resort holding and management company -- to manage the property.

The grand opening of Barton Creek Resort was held in September, 1987. In May, 1989 the property was sold to ClubCorp Resorts, which broke ground in October 1989, for a second golf course, designed by Austin native Ben Crenshaw & partner Bill Coore, which opened late April, 1991. In May of that same year, the resort acquired Lakeside, which featured an 18-hole Arnold Palmer-designed course. In 2000 158-tower rooms were added, bringing the total number of guestrooms to 303. Other enhancements included a new 18-holeTom Fazio-designed golf course (Canyons), an enhanced tennis complex, expanded meeting space and restaurant capacity, and a $1.2 million resort swimming pool.

In December 2006, KSL Resorts, owners of the Hotel Del Coronado, La Costa Resort & Spa, Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa, The Homestead and  Vail Mountain Lodge, purchased Barton Creek with the intention to return the resort to its original splendor. Many enhancements are planned for the property, including luxurious re-designed guestrooms, updated spa salon and enhanced spa arrival as well as the addition of a lobby coffee market with on-the-go dining options.
